Winter  Baseball Camps!
Monterey Plainsmen Baseball Camps are designed to teach the fundamentals of the great game of baseball. Fundamentals are essential for a young baseball player. They provide the basis for improvement, which aids in the overall enjoyment of the game. Coach Oliver, Coach Morris, Coach Reagan, Coach Rangel, Coach Perez and former Plainsmen are excited about the opportunity to teach these skills to every young baseball player attending this year’s camp.

Mayo signs with Texas Tech University

Jeremy Mayo signed a letter of intent to play baseball with Texas Tech University,  Thursday, April 27, 2006.  Jeremy was accompanied by his parents (Rick  and Vina Sweeney). Jeremy was an outstanding player this year as both a catcher and pitcher and will make an excellent addition to the TTU 2007 roster. Congratulations!

Bettis throws complete game,  gets a win and goes 4 for 4, Simmons 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs,  Monterey ends district play on three straight wins and heads to the PlayOffs in Midland on Friday May 5th.

Plainsmen 4 *  Coronado 6

Scoreless into the sixth inning Monterey gave up one run then came back in the 7th to send the game into extra innings. Remaining a pitcher's dual until the 10th when both teams scored big innings, Monterey fell just short. Bettis pitched a near shutout and threw 9 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.  Monterey battled the entire game and looked like a team getting ready to make a run in the playoffs.

Monterey Plainsmen 16  *  Tascosa 5

The Plainsmen’s hot hitting continued as the Plainsmen routed Tascosa 16-5 in 5 innings at the Tascosa field Saturday afternoon..  The Plainsmen had 15 hits with Taylor Ashby and Spenser Mailman both having 3 hits.  Every starter had at least one hit.  Chad Bettis pitched a solid game while improving his record to 4-6.

 

Monterey Plainsmen 12  *  Lubbock High 2

The Plainsmen pounded the Lubbock High Westerners 12-2 in 5 innings at Moegle Field on Friday night.  The Plainsmen had 13 hits with Taylor Ashby leading the way with 3 hits including a double and 2 runs batted in and 3 runs scored.  Spenser Mailman, Chad Bettis, Jeremy Mayo and Tyler Reagan had 2 hits.  Ben Seymore and Dillon Jones also had hits for the Plainsmen. Mayo pitched a solid 4 innings giving up only 1 run for the win improving his record to 6-2.  Trevor Stringer pitched the fifth inning.

 

Monterey 16 -Tascosa 6

The Plainsmen brought their bats out in beating the Tascosa Rebels 16-6 in 5 innings at Moegle Field on Tuesday night.  The Plainsmen banged out 19 hits with Jeremy Mayo leading the way with 4 hits including a double and a triple and 3 runs batted in.  Plainsmen having 3 hits were Taylor Ashby, Dillon Jones and Tyler Reagan.  Every Plainsmen batter had at  least one hit.  Hitting doubles were Reagan, Mayo, Reagan, and Casey Simmons. Ashby also had a triple and Ben Seymore had an inside the park home run. Mayo pitched the complete game giving up the 6 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 base on balls.  He improves his record to 5-2.   The next game for Monterey is at 4:30 pm Friday, March 31 versus Amarillo High in Amarillo.

 

 

Varsity Dominates Lubbock High

Varsity comes back with a strong outing on Saturday against Lubbock High winning 13-4 bringing the district record to 1-1. Bettis threw a complete game for a win with 5Ks,and 7 hits. The whole team contributed to the offense, everybody was hitting the ball.  Next outing is Tuesday against Tascosa at home

Disappointing District Opener

Monterey suffered a disappointing district opener loss to Coronado. 14-4 in 7 innings, Bettis started and receives the error assisted loss. Cold weather, lack of offense and too many walks all contributed to a game that slipped away after the 4th inning.

 

Varsity splits with Abilene Cooper

Friday the varsity team won one and lost one in Abilene in the rain against Abilene Cooper. Mayo pitched five innings and allowed only one hit in the win and Holleman came in for the last two innings.  Both games started off with big first innings assisted with errors and neither team could come back.
 
 

Ron Bartley , long time Monterey Baseball and Red Cheks supporter, received a life time achievement award for his tireless efforts in support of the First Bank Classic Tournament.

After giving up a loss to Arlington Martin, Monterey wins four straight games against Permian, Frenship, El Paso Montwood and Odessa High. Mayo pitched two complete games and had one home run. Henderson started and Holleman closed in the Frenship game, with Stringer pitching a complete game for the win against Odessa. Defense had the best 4 game run of the season and the bats show signs of coming alive. Spring break then down to Abilene for a double header on Friday.

Tournament of Champions

Plainsmen Varsity  finishes the tournament with three wins and two loses. Losing by only one run in both games, Monterey was very competitive in all the games.  During the series, Ashby and Mayo both went yard and Cobb added a Grand Slam showing the team's  improved offense. Pitching highlights include Bettis, Mayo and Henderson all receiving  wins.

Round Rock Tournament

Battling cold rainy weather on Thursday and Friday Monterey lost the first three games of the tournament. Saturday's games where rained out in Austin and substitute games where played in Belton against Belton High School. Varsity won both games in Belton, with the final game going into the 11 inning before getting the win 10-6.  Ask anyone in attendance, this was the most exciting game so far this year.

Season Opener Monterey vs. Midland High

Varsity makes a good showing against a tough opponent in their season opener on Monday evening in Midland. Falling short by only one run (3-4) the team settled down after a slow start. Chad Bettis pitched 5 innings and Jeremy Mayo pitched the 6th allowing only 2 earned runs for the game. Ben Seymore,
Taylor Ashby, Tyler Reagan, and Jeremy Mayo provide some bright spots in the offense. Next game is Thursday at Dell Diamond in Austin.

Baseball Team visits Covenant Children's Hospital

The 2005 Monterey Baseball Team took time off from their busy schedule of training for the upcoming 2006 season to visit the children at Covenant Hospital on Thursday afternoon December 15th, 2005.  Taylor Ashby was Santa's helper passing out gifts and with help from the entire team they made many of the children's stay at the hospital just a little better. Thanks to Coach Oliver a for coordinating the Christmas efforts.

        Taylor Ashby signed a letter of intent to play baseball with Texas Tech University,  Monday, November 14, 2005.  Taylor is accompanied by his parents (Gary and Terri Ashby), sisters and Coach Fred Oliver.  Taylor was an integral part of the team's State Championship run last year and is currently the MHS batting champion and plays center field. Gary Ashby also played for Monterey from 1971-1973 and was part of the MHS 1972 State Champions team.
