Varsity Coach:   Fred Oliver

Fred Oliver is starting his 7th season as the MONTEREY PLAINSMAN head coach. Coach Oliver graduated from high school in Grove, Oklahoma. He then attended Northeastern A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma, where he played baseball for two years. He completed his undergraduate work at Oklahoma State University in 1975 and obtained his Master of Science degree from OSU in 1980. In 1976 Coach Oliver began his coaching career in Duncan, Oklahoma. He served there for four years while helping coach the football team to two State Championships. After five years in Owasso, Oklahoma, Coach Oliver and his family moved to Plainview, Texas in 1985. While in Plainview, Oliver coached the team to the most wins in school history. The Oliver’s moved to Lufkin in 1988. Oliver guided the Panthers to eight District Championships in his eleven years at the helm. The Panthers reached the “Final Four” in 1992 and 1994. His record at Lufkin was 221-111 and his overall record is 429-235. Oliver reached his 400th win in 2005. He was named Coach of the Year in District 12-5A eight times and received the award “Coach Who Makes a Difference” from High School Extra/Prime Sports Television in 1995-96.

Coach Oliver is an active member of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.  He is also an active member of the National Baseball Coaches Association. He served for two years as the President of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association from 2002-2004. From 1993-2000 he served as a member of the National Ranking Committee for Baseball America and the B.C.A. He is serving as the THSBCA All-Star Chairman for 2006-2007. He has been an associate scout for the Houston Astros for 15 years.

Coach Oliver’s wife, Barby, retired from teaching this past year. She educated children for 32 years!  She was raised in Kermit, Texas. The Olivers have two daughters. Mecca works for the Staubach Co. in the Dallas area and Lindsay who teaches 1st grade at Arnett Benson Elementary here in Lubbock.

Varsity Asst.:   Coach Jarrod Morris 

Coach Morris is the pitching coach forthe Varsity Baseball Team at Monterey High School.  He grew up in Amarillo, Texas and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1998.  He went to Lubbock Christian University where he played baseball.  He received a Bachelor of  Science in Kinesiology in 2003.  

Coach Morris began his coaching career as a volunteer coach at Monterey High School.  He is now the Offensive Coordinator for the Sophomore football team and works with Special Teams on the Varsity Football Team.  Coach Morris has been a Plainsmen for 3 years. 

He is a member of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, Texas High School Coaches Association, Greater West Texas Baseball Coaches Association and National Baseball Coaches Association. 

Coach Morris’ wife, Holly, is a Lending Assistant at City Bank.  She was raised in Edmond, OK.  Holly and Jarrod have three dogs: Wrigley, Fenway, and Yankee. The Morris’ are looking forward to another exciting baseball Season at Monterey!

 
 
 

 

JV Blue Coach   Mike Sander  

This is Coach Sanders 2nd year with the Monterey High School Plainsmen. Mike is the head JV Blue team coach.  He also coachers the Varsity catchers.  Coach Sanders is also a Plainsman Football coach. Coach Sanders graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1992 with a B.A. in Kinesiology. He was part of the Abilene ISD from 1992-1998 where he coached Freshman, JV and assisted the Varsity for the Abilene Cooper High School baseball team. Mike also taught and coached at Clack Middle School in Abilene.

Coach Sanders is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association as well as the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Coach Sanders has been married for 15 years to Traci. They have a daughter, Shelbi Nicole who is 14 and a son, Zac D who is 12.
